Interesting facts about cats and dogs

Some of these we know, some are new or clarified, all are interesting to know about our animal companions. I wonder about hunting not being instinctive in cats, though–I’ve raised a few neonatal kittens who decidedly show a propensity, at least with toys, though they may not follow through with the real thing.

I heard a wonderful segment on “All Things Considered” yesterday afternoon concerning scientists having finally discovered exactly how cats drink, and how they manage to get any liquid into their mouths considering the odd and unique way that they drink. Supposedly this research finding is supposed to give scientists all sorts of clues into all kinds of human behavior!

Our cat Justin does not drink in this fashion at all, but has his own way. He dips his paws in the water and licks it off. He had a wonderful way of letting us know that his water bowl was empty the other day. Here’s a photo:

Paula, I actually posted that yesterday on my Facebook page so I’ll post it today or tomorrow on this blog. Then I found that story appeared in about a half-dozen other places! I’ll have to post them all because they all tell a little bit more about the story–such as they reason cats drink that was is so they don’t soak themselves. It was all very interesting!

I’ve had a few paw drinkers too, and ironically enough I was going to post my Cookie drinking my orange juice with her paw today!

Now that’s a look on Justin’s face! Don’t you feel about as big as an ant for letting his water bowl go dry?

You bet we did! But, he forgave us – and so did our dog Princess! Princess was the one who alerted us to the fact that Justin was standing in the water bowl, which the two of them share. I think she thought at first that Justin was hogging it all for himself! Pets can be so entertaining!
